With Slaney and her sister working in the wine industry for a combination of 16 years, they love to test out the local wines and bars. There is certainly no shortage of bars in Lisbon and there are constantly new ones popping up.
For us, the best areas for bars and nightlife in Lisbon are Bairro Alto, Bica Santa Catarina, Cais Do Sodré and Santos. Barrio Alto doesn't have the best name, we have never had issues but always good to be a little extra cautious at night. Besides the slightly tainted name, the area and areas around have some stand out bars worth visiting.

What are the best bars in Lisbon?
Topo at Martim Moniz - famous rooftop bar, often lively, with live DJs. It can get very busy on the weekend but the views over Saint George's Castle are amazing, especially in the evening as the light hits the rooftops.
Onda Cocktail Bar - small unassuming cocktail bar, but debatably the best cocktails in the city.
Ulysses Lisbon Speakeasy - located in Alfama, the smallest bar in the world, with a great whiskey selection.
Imperial garden - A hidden gem in the heart of the city. Great cocktails, beautiful garden setting. Popular with locals for evening/ afternoon drinks. If you’re lucky, you might catch some live music too.
Casa Independente - quirky venue, very popular at night. Cocktails tend to be only OK. But you go there for the venue, atmosphere and fun.
Cafe da Garagem - Unfussy, relaxed but certainly a go-to for the discerning trendy types, amazing views over Graca, Mouraria and beyond. Nice cheese and meat boards.
Rio Maravilha - cool bar in trendy LX factory. If there, don't forget to check out the top terrace with views out onto the river and over the "Golden Gate Bridge", accompanied by their own colorful counterpart to the Jesus statue.
Pensão Amor - originally a brothel turned into an eclectic, fun and all round great cocktail bar.
Bar Tejo - An amazing intimate live music/jam session venue. You will often find an eclectic range of musicians and an fantastic atmosphere. We often find ourselves stopping off here for a nightcap. Stays open late and HIGHLY recommended.
O Bom O Mau e O Vilão - Few doors up from Pansão Amor, cool bar with a touch of the sophisticated house party vibes, good live music.
Java Rooftop Bar - a very popular rooftop bar and restaurant. This has been hit and miss for us but a nice experience, especially for a girls weekend, hens/ bucks experience.
VAGO - This musical bar with vinyl turntables serves very good cocktails and small tapas to snack on.
Park bar rooftop - Not easy to find but worth it! Placed at the top of a 6 story car park in Barrio Alto, the vibey bar offers a chilled atmosphere and panoramic views. Bring suncream

What are the local Lisbon drinks/ alcohols?
Ginjinha: A traditional Portuguese cherry liqueur, often served as a digestif. You'll find small bars and shops, particularly in Lisbon's historic neighborhoods, offering this sweet and aromatic drink. Always a fun end to a meal.
Port Wine: When in Portugal! While Porto is more famous for its port wine, Lisbon also appreciates this fortified wine. Many restaurants and bars in Lisbon feature an extensive selection of port wines, both white and red.
Vinho Verde: We love a Vinho Verde! Translating to "green wine," this young and slightly effervescent wine is popular in Portugal. It pairs well with the local seafood, and you can find it in many Lisbon restaurants. It is light and refreshing and usually slightly lower in alcohol, perfect for a mid afternoon option in between all your walking.
Aguardente: A strong grape-based spirit, similar to brandy, popular among locals. It's often enjoyed as a digestif and can be found in traditional taverns and bars.
Caipirinha: While traditionally associated with Brazil, this cocktail made with cachaça (sugar cane spirit), lime, and sugar has found its way to Lisbon's nightlife scene, especially in more modern and trendy bars.
Bica: This is not a drink, but worth a mention. It is a local coffee that's similar to an espresso. Ordering a "bica" is a great way to experience Portugal's coffee culture.
Sagres and Super Bock: These are two popular Portuguese beers. You'll find them in almost every bar, and they are great companions when enjoying Lisbon's vibrant street life.
Lisbon Lemonade (Limonada de Lisboa): A non-alcoholic option, this refreshing lemonade is often served with a hint of mint and is perfect for quenching your thirst on a warm day.
