Lightweight rain jackets

We have definitely been guilty of overpacking on more trips than not but when it comes to backpacking, the more you pack, the more of a nuisance it is going to be. You really learn, live and breath by the moto of "less is more". We have consolidated our must have travel accessories for backpacking below.

You can also browse through and purchase my recommended backpacking essentials

The right travel accessories only enhance your journey (and help avoid arguments). These items will make your trip more convenient and comfortable. Helping you prepare for the different scenarios and situations that arise when we are backpacking.

1. Sturdy Backpack

A good quality backpack is a must-have for any backpacker. Look for one that is durable, spacious, and has multiple compartments to keep your belongings organized. Organization avoids the frustration of having to dig through everything to find something specific. It is also really nice to be able to seperate shoes and dirty laundry from everything else, just saying! It should also have comfortable shoulder straps and a padded back for added comfort. If you plan to travel by boat/ ferry, consider adding waterproof material to the priority list. For 8 months, we recommend anywhere between 40ltr - 70ltr. Anything more is a nuisance. For woman, try woman specific versions and see if they are more suited to you. Slaney wasn't fussed but when she tried on the woman specific version there was a huge difference in comfort. Cost can vary but we have added a few options here.

2. Lightweight carry bag

This will be your best friend, your day back or your bag for the longer day trips/ overnight tours etc. A 15/20ltr option is more than enough. You will love it so much you will consider why you didn't just bring that.

3. Compact and Lightweight Sleeping Bag

Whether you're camping in the wilderness or staying in a hostel, a compact and lightweight sleeping bag is essential. Look for one that is easy to pack and provides enough insulation for different weather conditions.

4. Versatile Travel Towel

A travel towel is a handy accessory that can be used for multiple purposes. It should be quick-drying, lightweight, and compact. Look for one that is made of microfiber material, as it is highly absorbent and dries quickly.

5. Durable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when you're on the go. Invest in a durable water bottle that is leak-proof and easy to carry. Look for one that is made of stainless steel or BPA-free plastic. Consider a purifying waterbottle depending on your destination. These will help eliminate toxins and viruses from your water.

6. Portable Power Bank

If you are committed to capturing those beautiful shots and staying connect a portable power bank is essential. It will ensure that your devices stay charged, allowing you to capture those memorable moments and stay connected with loved ones.

7. Universal Travel Adapter

Different countries have different types of electrical outlets. A universal travel adapter will allow you to charge your devices no matter where you are. Look for one that has multiple USB ports and is compatible with a wide range of devices.

8. Reliable Headlamp

Whether you're hiking, camping, or exploring caves, a reliable headlamp is a must-have accessory. It will provide you with hands-free lighting and ensure that you can navigate in the dark.

8. Compact First Aid Kit

Safety should always be a priority when traveling. A compact first aid kit will come in handy for minor injuries and ailments. Make sure it includes essentials such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, bug spray and any necessary prescription medications.

9. Lightweight and breathable rainjacket

A lightweight and breathable rain jacket is essential for travelers due to its versatility and convenience. Its lightweight design makes it easy to pack and carry, taking up minimal space in your luggage or daypack. Additionally, its breathable fabric ensures comfort during outdoor activities, allowing you to stay dry and protected from the elements without feeling overheated or uncomfortable. We have added a few options we recommend to our wishlish here.

10. Organisation cubes

This may not seem like an "essential" but if you are travelling for a long lenght of time, you will be so grateful to have them. Living out of a backpack for weeks or months at a time can be liberating but also has its frustrating moments too. Organisation cubes allow you to keep things seperate, maximises space and pack quickly. Carefree packing for carefree travel!

11. Prescription medications

If travelling for a length of time, come prepared with your medication or at least as much as you can. This eliminates the uncertainity of the local medical systems/ having to go through your travel insurance to pay doctors etc. Check with a travel doctor before you go what you will need for your specific destinations. If travelling through malaria zones, make sure you have the correct quantity of malaria tablets.

Having these essential travel accessories will help make your travels more comfortable. So, before you head off, make sure to pack these items in your backpack. Happy travels!
